One of my clients was really struggling to find time for purposeful activity and she came up with the most unusual plan.
Her laundry room was on a different floor than the bedrooms. She folded one piece of laundry and ran it upstairs to the bedroom and placed it in the dresser. Then she returned back downstairs to the laundry room for another article of clothing which she folded and ran back upstairs to the dresser. As you can imagine, by the time she finished her laundry she had completed her 30 minutes of purposeful activity. Since she was going up and down the stairs she was getting quite a workout. Best of all, she felt great about both accomplishments!
Be creative!

I usually don't have a problem accomplishing 30 minutes of purposeful activity daily. Fridays are typically easy as I swim with a Masters swim group very early in the AM for close to 90 minutes. Today, my alarm went off at 5am and I could barely lift my arm to shut it off as a result of the very challenging Cross-Fit session I did Thursday morning :).
ReplyDeleteWhile shutting off the alarm I was contemplating whether a tough coached swim workout was really in my best interest given the fact that I could barely lift my arms. I then remembered 'The Pyramid' Ron talked about at the beginning of the session yesterday. At the bottom of the pyramid was nutrition, followed by rest and recovery, then general fitness and sport specific activity was at the very top. I rolled over and went back to sleep opting to recover my tired muscles and stay out of the pool. In the past when I've made the decision not to get up and swim, I always felt guilty. Today, however I didn't feel guilty. I truly believe that my body needed to recover from the many runs I've done this week and that killer Cross-Fit session. I happily walked my dog for about 30 minutes in the bright sunshine and didn't feel guilty that I wasn't sweating, breathing heavy or wearing workout clothes. I will find numerous times throughout the day to stretch my sore arms and pects. So, this may not be the most creative way to find 30 minutes of purposeful activity but I wanted to share that recovery is important and nothing to feel guilty about!
Every week I schedule my workouts in however there are many days when things don't go as planned. Either my morning workout just didn't get done or I'm too tired or sore for the workout I planned. To help me with this, I have a backup plan. On the days, I'm tired or sore, I do a 30 minute yoga routine. One that focuses on stretching and breathing. On the days, I just missed my morning workout, I put my bike on the trainer and work on my cadence or I do my Tri-Fit warmup with my family :)
ReplyDeleteI was traveling all week and working at a trade show. I decided to walk everywhere I went. When I did walk (much to the dismay of other attendees) I did it in 'aggressively.' It wasn't a crossfit workout.....but at least it was done. On my return flight (which took the whole day) I had a layover in Dulles. I just walked the terminal.
ReplyDeleteHere’s 90 minutes of purposeful activity – my friend is a hunter and he is teaching his 12 yr. old son. Yesterday we went to a game reserve, put out 8 pheasants into the 100 acre fields, with snow, switch grass, corn stalks and some plowed. I took the most difficult terrain each time we “drove” the field with the dogs looking for the birds. I was the 3rd dog! We got 7 out of 8 birds, the 12 yr. old had a blast and I was soaked with sweat. We got outdoors, it was a nice morning, and it went by in absolutely no time. My legs ache today!
